MY FATHER, MY HERO
Some people leave behind memories. Others leave behind legacies. My father left both. October is a special month for me because it marks the birth of the man whose love shaped my childhood, whose wisdom moulded my character, and whose sacrifices continue to influence my life long after his passing. This is a tribute to the extraordinary man who taught me that love is action, protection is presence, and true strength is found in sacrifice, the man I was privileged to call Dad. Every year, as this month arrives, I find myself reflecting on the incredible legacy he left behind. Today, I want to honour the man who was so much more than my father, he was my hero, my protector, my greatest teacher, and one of life's greatest blessings.
Not every child is fortunate enough to grow up knowing what it feels like to be deeply loved, fiercely protected, and relentlessly championed by a father. I was one of the blessed ones. My father did more than raise me, he shaped me. The woman I am today is built upon the sacrifices he made, the values he instilled, and the unwavering love he gave so freely. Even though he is no longer here, his fingerprints remain on every chapter of my life. The older I get, the more I realize that my greatest privilege was not growing up with wealth or luxury; it was growing up with a father who loved, protected, guided, and believed in me with everything he had. Some men leave behind an inheritance of money, property, or possessions. My father left me something far more valuable: a blueprint for life.
This tribute is dedicated to the man who raised me, shaped me, protected me, and loved me with a devotion that continues to guide me long after he has left this world. He was not just my father, he was my first hero, my first teacher, my greatest protector, and one of God's greatest gifts to my life. Long before I understood the weight of his sacrifices, my father was quietly building the woman I would one day become.
My father was a man who knew struggle. He lived with pain and health challenges, yet he never allowed his circumstances to define him. Instead, he chose every day to show up fully as a husband and a father. Where others may have surrendered, he stood firmer. Where life tried to weaken him, it somehow made him stronger.
He taught my brother and me one of the most important lessons we could ever learn: know your worth and live in a way that reflects it.
Through the way he loved us, I learned what fatherhood truly means. I learned that a father is not simply the man whose blood runs through your veins. A father is the one who loves, guides, protects, teaches, and sacrifices. My father fathered many people who were not biologically his because his heart was bigger than boundaries. He understood that true fatherhood is measured by presence, not DNA.
As a daughter, there was something incredibly powerful about growing up with my father's presence in our home. His presence made me feel safe. It made me feel seen. It made me feel protected.
That feeling of security became the foundation of my self-confidence.
My father was strict, sometimes very strict, and as a young girl I did not always understand it. Today, I realize that his discipline was never about control. It was about preparation. Through correction, he taught me accountability. Through boundaries, he taught me wisdom. Through his high standards, he taught me excellence.
Looking back now, I understand that every "no" he gave me was rooted in love.
My father protected our family fiercely, especially my mother. He never tolerated disrespect towards her, whether from strangers or from us, his children. He modelled what it means to honour, cherish, and defend the woman you have committed your life to.
Watching him love my mother taught me what love should look like. It taught me that protection goes far beyond physical safety. Protection is being present. Protection is standing up for your family. Protection is creating an environment where everyone under your care feels valued, respected, and secure.
My father was also our provider. Yet providing was never just about paying bills. Every meal on our table was an act of love. Every roof over our heads was an act of protection. Every sacrifice he made was an act of devotion.
When he worked hard to earn a living, he was doing more than providing financially. He was shielding us from uncertainty, instability, and poverty. There was immense pride in the way he cared for his family. Through his work and sacrifices, he gave us something money can never buy; peace of mind.
One of the things I appreciate most now is how intentionally he protected me from dangers I could not yet see.
As a young girl, there were moments when I thought he was overprotective. Today, I understand that he was protecting me from making decisions I was not mature enough to navigate. His guidance strengthened my judgment. His vigilance sharpened my discernment. His protection prepared me to eventually protect myself even though I didn’t do it earlier in my life and in my marriage.
He was not raising children; he was raising future adults. Everything he did was designed to equip us with the strength, resilience, wisdom, and character we would need long after he was gone. Respect was another lesson my father insisted upon. Respect for him. Respect for my mother. Respect for others. Respect for authority.
At the time, it seemed strict. Today, it seems visionary. My father understood something many people overlook children who fail to respect authority at home often struggle to respect authority everywhere else. He knew that learning respect within the family would shape how we interacted with teachers, employers, the law, our communities, and even our own consciences. He was building character, not compliance.
He laid a moral foundation that continues to guide me today. My mother taught us right from wrong, and my father reinforced those lessons through both his words and his actions. He was a man of integrity; he taught me that a person's word matters. That honesty matters, that treating people fairly matters and that character matters most when nobody is watching.
He didn't just preach values, he lived them. His life was the lesson; his example was the curriculum. And I was blessed enough to be one of his students. Even though he is no longer physically here, my father has never really left me. I carry him in the way I make decisions, the way I solve problems, the way I treat people, and the way I love. I carry his voice in moments of uncertainty, I carry his wisdom in moments of challenge, and I carry his strength in moments of weakness.
Death took his presence, but it could never take his influence; He lives on in my heart every single day.
Papa, thank you.
Thank you for loving me so fiercely, thank you for protecting me so jealously. Thank you for treating me like a princess while simultaneously teaching me to be strong. Thank you for making sure I knew that I was enough. Thank you for giving me a childhood filled with safety, stability, and joy. Thank you for teaching me to care for myself and for others. Thank you for showing me that charity truly begins at home. Thank you for being my biggest supporter, my mentor, my protector, and my rock. Most importantly, thank you for being the first man I ever loved and the man I always wanted to make proud.
Your sacrifices were not in vain; your lessons did not end with your life, and your legacy continues through me. May your beautiful soul continue to rest in eternal peace.
While writing this, I cannot help but think about my own children.
Sadly, the kind of fatherly love and sacrifice that I received from my father is not the experience they have had. As a mother, that reality has often broken my heart. Every child deserves to know what it feels like to be loved, guided, protected, and affirmed by a father.
Girls need a father's love because it teaches them their worth before the world attempts to define it for them. Boys need affection, encouragement, guidance, and reassurance that they are deeply loved. I wish my children's story had unfolded differently. I wish they had experienced the kind of unconditional fatherly presence that shaped my own life. But life does not always unfold according to our plans.
What comforts me is knowing that even though they may not have received everything from their father, they have inherited something precious from their grandfather's legacy through me. The values, strength, resilience, faith, integrity, and love that my father poured into me are the very things I now pour into them.
Perhaps that is how legacies survive, one generation receives the gift and the next generation becomes the gift. And so today, I celebrate my father, my hero, my protector, my teacher and my greatest example of what a father should be. A man who went from being the guardian of my childhood to becoming the compass of my adulthood.
Writing my book was my way of honouring my mother, whose story and sacrifices deserved to be celebrated. But today, my heart turns to my father, a man I will honour for the rest of my life. A man who was more than a parent to me; he was my protector, my hero, my safe place, and one of my greatest blessings.
He will always hold a sacred place in my heart because his love became the foundation upon which I built my life. His protection became my confidence, giving me the courage to face the world. His wisdom became the compass that continues to guide me, even now that he is no longer physically here.
If strength had a face, it would be my father's. If love had a voice, it would sound like his guidance. And if sacrifice had a name, it would belong to the man who spent his life ensuring that his children could dream beyond the limitations he himself endured.
My father never simply told us we could achieve greatness; he quietly moved mountains so that we would have the opportunity to do so. He carried burdens we knew nothing about, fought battles he rarely spoke of, and made sacrifices that only became clearer as I grew older. Looking back, I realize that some of the opportunities I took for granted were made possible by his unwavering determination to give us a better life than the one he had known.
The woman I am today is, in many ways, a reflection of the man he was. His values live in my decisions. His lessons echo in my thoughts. His love continues to strengthen me in moments when I feel weak. Though he may no longer walk beside me, his legacy walks within me every day.
And for that, I will be grateful for the rest of my life❤️π️

As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him - Psalm 103:13
